Office Location The Adult Education Office is located in the Richard McLarnan Technology Center building directly behind (East) of the Career Center (follow the signs). Most short-term classes will continue to be held in the Career Center (front building). Those being held in the Richard McLarnan Technology Center building will be noted as such.
Eligibility Registration is open to all students over 16 years of age who are not enrolled in a regular public school program. School-aged students must have written permission from parents and the school principal or counselor PRIOR to registration for classes. If maximum enrollment is reached, priority is given to adults first.
Senior Citizen or Freedom Years Discount Senior citizens enrolling in short-term Adult Education classes may do so at 10% off the published tuition by showing their Golden Buckeye card at registration, provided the number of regular tuition students in the class is sufficient to offer the class independent of discounted tuition students. Specific Senior Citizen classes already offered at a reduced rate do not receive a discount. Adults enrolled in the First-Knox Freedom Years Program are entitled to a maximum 15% tuition discount by showing their Freedom Years card when paying fees, providing the number of regular tuition students in the class is sufficient to offer the class independent of discounted students. Discount does not apply to already discounted Senior Citizen classes.
Gift Certificates Gift Certificates for any occasion are available for purchase in any amount that you desire. Gift certificates may be used for partial or full payment of any class offered through the Adult Education Department at the Knox County Career Center. Gift certificates may be purchased at the Adult Education office Monday thru Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., and Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Tuition Since the Adult Education Department is self-supporting, fees are established to cover operating expenses. All tuition and fees are payable by the first night of class. Online course tuition is payable at registration.
Financial Aid (Most classes of 600 or more hours) Several types of financial assistance exist, including PELL Grants, Veterans Training Benefits, Workforce Investment (WIA), the Department of Job and Family Services, and student loans. Contact the KCCC Financial Aid officer, Sheryl Mickley, at 393-2933 x1107.
Canceled Classes The Adult Education Department must cancel classes which do not obtain a required minimum enrollment. We reserve the right to cancel, postpone, discontinue or combine classes before or at the first class meeting due to low enrollment, teacher illness, equipment breakdown, inclement weather or other emergencies. Attempts are made to contact students whose class has been canceled. In the event of a canceled class, a full refund will be given.
Textbook and Laboratory Fees Textbooks and lab costs ARE NOT INCLUDED in published fees unless otherwise indicated. Due to changing publisher costs and shipping expense, it is not possible to quote book prices in advance. Students are expected to purchase or provide required books and supplies. Textbooks are normally available at the time of fee payment. Due to the short length of many classes, students should not expect their instructor to completely cover the entire content of any book being used. Since photo reproduction of texts is against copyright law, the use of any such materials is not permitted. Texts used in most computer classes are approved courseware for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification program. MOS guidelines qualify students under Microsoft's end user credentialing program. Individuals who might be interested in the MOS certification should contact the Adult Education Department.
Safety In programs or classes where students are required to wear necessary protective clothing and/or safety gear, students must always adhere to all classroom and shop regulations pertaining to individual and group safety. Report any accidents which might occur causing any degree of personal injury.
Parking Knox County Career Center has ample parking, however, not all is located next to an entrance. Students are requested to use overflow parking available in the rear of the building. For obvious reasons, please don't park in driveways, unauthorized areas, or in more than one space. You are responsible for protecting your belongings by locking your vehicle when in the building.
Non-Discrimination All students are treated equally, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, disability, national origin, or any other category protected by law.
Inclement Weather In the event of inclement or threatening weather, listen ot WQIO-93.7FM or WMVO-1300AM for class cancellation notices. If secondary (high school) classes are canceled, or if high school classes are dismissed early due to weather conditions, all evening classes are ALSO canceled. Listen to WMVO or WQIO for official announcements.
Student Conduct Students are expected to adhere to all regulations set forth by the Knox County Career Center Board of Education no matter where the class is being taught. Regulations include: no possession or use of any tobacco products; no alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs; and any disruption of the educational process are cause for dismissal without refund.
Refund Policy for Short-Term Classes Please be certain of the classes you desire and read this refund policy before registering. There are two keys to a class refund. Except where noted in program descriptions, you can receive a refund if your class is canceled by the school, or you personally request a refund prior to the second session for a class scheduled for three or more sessions. You may select a check refund or a credit to your MC/VISA card, depending upon your original means of payment. A $15 processing fee will be charged per refund. To avoid the processing fee, you may select a raincheck. Rainchecks requested during Winter or Spring are good only during the following Fall session. Once issued, a raincheck cannot be reverted to a cash, check or credit refund.
Certificates Certificates will be issued to those persons enrolled in job specific skill training areas that are directly related to specific job duties. Those who meet instructor and/or school requirements will receive their certificate at the final class session. Sorry, no certificates will be mailed.
Instructors Although specific instructors may be noted in the catalog or web site, the Career Center reserves the right to make changes from that which is published.
